You'll probably have heard the terms 'calorie deficit' or 'energy balance' being thrown around on social media by fitness professionals saying its all you need to lose weight. But what the hell does it mean??
A lot of companies claim they have the product YOU NEED to lose weight. That they've discovered the secret and it comes in ingredient form. So if this is true, why do trusted fitness professionals keep saying you need to be in an energy deficit? Where do I get one of those?
Unfortunately it's not something you can pick up at your local Holland and Barratt. It's all to do with how your body uses energy; how it burns it and how it can also store it.
We need a certain amount of fuel for our bodies to function and we get this in the form of food. Food is energy and we know how much energy is in it by the number of calories in it. Just like a car, we need a certain amount of fuel to get from point A to point B. But unlike a car, we can store fuel in the form of fat for when our tank is empty. This happens when we over consume calories that we don't burn off in a day.
If we want to tap into our reserve fuel (fat stores) we need to use more than we put in. So if we want to burn fat we need to eat less calories than we use throughout a day.
This is known as an ENERGY DEFICIT, and is the only true way to lose weight short of cutting off limbs.
It all comes down to energy in vs energy out. That's it. That's all.
